The buildings superstructure was designed for efficiency and economy by selecting a bar joist roof framing system and Chevron braced frames for the lateral force resisting system.
Spine Surgical Center Structural Engineering Design | Champlain Spine and Pain Management, Plattsburgh, New York
The building’s overhangs are constructed using steel plates that cantilever off of the supporting roof structure. This allows the overhang profiles to remain thin and streamlined. The main entrance canopy is cantilevered off heavy building columns that are hidden in the exterior wall of the building.

The design of the steel superstructure was complicated by the fact that it needed to be constructed over existing basement space. This required extending some of the columns through the floor of the new entry space and down to the basement below where they were supported on existing basement walls or new footings. The poor soils required the portion of the entry that extends out from the ME Building footprint to be supported on helical piles.
